A noticeable section of the highway has been settling for the last few years, causing a large dip near the Little Pokegma River. WisDOT will repair the road core in spot locations of the settlements.

There also have been embankment failures on several spots on the side of the highway which will be reinforced. The project will also repair select culverts.

Beyond road repair, the project will also upgrade and install curb ramps at pedestrian crossings in South Superior.  Crews will mill and overlay parking lanes in the residential areas with asphalt. The same will be done with intersections in the improvement area.

Traffic impacts will begin to take place in the fall of 2024. In the Little Pokegma River and embankment failure areas, one-lane road closures will take place. They plan to use temporary signals and put a 12-foot wide-width restriction in place.

Trucks will be asked to detour by using WIS 35, US 2, I-35, and MN 23.
