Cathy Kates

I'm a Northland girl, born in Cloquet, raised in Wrenshall, and currently living in Duluth. I consider myself lucky to have been able to share my mornings laughing with you for the past 20 years. It's like audio Facebook. I make new friends, but I keep up with old friends too. I set three alarms to get up at 3:10am to do my job, then nap in the afternoon! I am a self-proclaimed multi-tasker (FYI: I am writing my bio, eating breakfast, holding three texting conversations and contemplating what I'll be having for lunch and what to make for dinner ALL right this second). I can't sit still. I even wear a head lamp at campfires so I can cross stitch at the same time. I love puppies, (especially my Schnauzer, Bauer), hot buttered movie theater popcorn, soup, the smell of a lake (especially if I’m fishing in it) and warm fuzzy blankets. I’m a lover, not a fighter, and yes it’s true, I get my hair cut on a weekly basis. I appreciate that you wake up with the B105 Breakfast Club, read and share my blogs and most of all, your friendship through the years! Peace, love and hugs!

Local Restaurant’s Creative Valentine Message Makes Me LOL

My husband and I don't usually celebrate Valentine's Day, but after running some errands we found ourselves with the throngs of Northland lovebirds dining together at a restaurant.  When I saw their Valentine message it made me giggle.  Kudos to Texas Roadhouse for their meaty message.

Unusual Valentine’s Day Gift Idea: Membership To The Manatee Club [VIDEO]

I wasn’t even quite sure what a Manatee was except when I sang about Barbara Manatee in the Veggie Tales Song. (am I the only one that remembers that).   Then, I received information about a club in Florida to save the Manatees.  They are an endangered species, and while they aren’t the most gorgeous animal, they do have the cutest tuft of whiskers.  If you're looking for an unusual Valentine's Day gift, how about a Manatee Club Membership

Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Hospice Is Looking For Volunteers

My mother passed of Leukemia in 2000 after a month in Essentia enduring chemotherapy. Stem cell replacement was virtually a new treatment of the cancer and that was our hope at that time. Unfortunately she never made it through the chemo treatments and ended up in hospice. I commend the nurses and volunteers on 3E at Essentia. From the day we put her in for chemo therapy to the night we sang What A Friend We Have In Jesus at her hospice room bedside, they held our hands, gave us reassuring hugs and helped us understand the process of dying with dignity.

Local Third Graders Address The Issue Of Seat Belts On School Buses

When I was a child seat belts, car seats or restraints for a child in a moving vehicle were nonexistent. I remember standing between my parents on the bench seat of the gas guzzling Chrysler as a toddler. When my daughter was young she could still sit in the front seat with me because cars weren’t all equipped with air bags. As time went on they became more strict until where we are today. Infant seats, rear facing car seats, car seats for toddlers and by law children in the back seat until they’re a certain age or weight. So, it has always baffled me that a vehicle that carries our children every week day for 9 months out of the year doesn’t have restraints of any kind, except for the driver.  While it has been brought up in legislation before, still nothing has done about it. Is it because of funding? Estimated costs to equip a school bus with seat belts is approximately $8000. Totally worth the money if it saves the lives of our children, don’t you think?

Does Minnesota Have As Many Snowmobile Enthusiasts As Wisconsin

My father always had snowmobiles. We had a Polaris, a Ski-doo and some of you may remember the Scorpion brand, we had one with the red seat sporting the raised scorpion logo.  I haven’t been on a sled for years and back then a sled referred to a child's toy. Recently while on a trip to my sisters in the heart of WI (and a snow belt) I was shocked to see all the trails and people on snowmobiles. Especially when we went to the Cross Country Bar in Rhineland.

5 Extinct Northland Restaurants Saw Many Valentine’s Proposals

As I was on air warning people to remember to make their dinner reservations for Valentine's Day before the ultimate times were booked, I began thinking about the restaurants we use to have in the area that many couples use to get engaged at while celebrating Valentine's dinner.  If you remember these restaurants do you miss them as much as I do?
