Cathy Kates

Hi y'all, thanks for checking out my bio! I grew up in the country community of Wrenshall, attended church in Carlton and worked in Cloquet. I adore and respect my family. My husband and I laugh and run together (well, I jog). My daughter is in her second year of college and keeps me young and our dog Bauer is an overactive Schnauzer. I love shoes, Asian food, and trying new recipes. My dream (at the moment) is to be on the Big Bang Theory or the Ellen Show. I have been in broadcasting for 16 years and thank you for your friendship and waking up to laugh with Ken, me and the Breakfast Club. ~Peace, Love & Hugs

End Of Year Task: Apply For 2015 Pet Licenses

As the holidays draw near, we begin to think about end-of-the-year tasks that need to be completed (like getting info together to file for taxes)!  One thing we overlook is licensing our pets. I lived in the country most of my life, so moving to Duluth was a culture shock where pets are concerned.  My dog is now on a leash in the yard for safety concerns, his and that of people passing by.  If you haven't already filled out your 2015 Pet License yet, it's time. (Yes, that's MY dog in the picture.  I came into the bedroom and found him using my neck pillow. Smart dog!)

Unexpected Flu Bug Visits Cathy Kates’ House

My husband Homie was feeling a little funky on Friday night.  He didn't really sound normal but he forged on.  Probably should have listened to the warning signs and stayed home instead of coming with me to the hockey game.  Who knew he had a 101.5 fever on the horizon?  Now, I'm playing nurse and washing my hands every five minutes.  I AM NOT GOING TO GET THE FLU!

Toys of the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s Exhibit At The MN History Center Extends Hours For Final Days

Remember these cute little bugs?  The Cootie Bug game was one of my favorites as a child, along with Parcheesi, Yahtzee and Life! (not a fan of Monopoly due to my crappy math ability, although it did teach me to make change).   But, everybody had their favorites.  "Toys" is a national traveling exhibit of toys making stop at the MN History Center and has been breaking attendance records.  They will take you back to your childhood and is something you're entire family will enjoy, but time is running out!

Minnesota Snowmobile Trails Open; Enthusiasts Can Check Trail Conditions Here

I use to be so scared of our snowmobile.  I would play in the snow at age 4 while my dad and sister would ride the Scorpion around the yard, running up on the porch shaking my head NO when they would stop and ask me if I wanted to ride.  Then, I got the guts to sit on it one day and dad took off.  My first ride on a snowmobile was a surprise, but honestly, you couldn't get me off the dang thing after that.

UPDATE: Lake Superior Ice Caves Near Apostle Islands Will Charge A $5 Fee, Season Passes Available

Did you get to see the ice caves last year?  I  regret I couldn't find the time to travel to Bayfield and see the amazing Wisconsin Ice Caves.  As you can see, my daughter and her boyfriend made it and said they were breath taking.  There's a very good chance the ice caves will happen again this year and this time the public will be charged a small fee.

Check Out The Lighthouse Center For Vision Loss Store For Gift Ideas

I pass by the Lighthouse Center for Vision Loss, 4505 West Superior Street (also known as Duluth LIghthouse for the Blind) every time I head to our neighborhood grocery store.  When I was a Duluth Lion's Club Member I helped to raise funds for the organization and collected used glasses on a regular basis from St. Luke's.  While I was in a public restroom yesterday I saw a poster for the Lighthouse and their low vision store.  I had no idea they had one, THIS is fabulous!

Time Saver: Wrap A Gift In Ten Seconds [VIDEO]

Ken and I have always volunteered to wrap gifts at the Salvation Army gift wrap booth at the mall.  We volunteer, we didn't say we were good at it.  In fact, we pretty much have anxiety all day, wait for days before we're scheduled.  But, this video may just change the anxiety to anticipation!

Fresh Snowfall Always Brings Out The Worst In Northland Parking Habits

I HAD to blog this because I feel like I need to defend myself.  Honestly, a fresh snowfall certainly brings out the worst in our parking habits.  Proof is in the picture above.  We've all experienced it and wondered what people were thinking (or if they even were) when they parked!

Duluth Police Warn Of Fraudulent Gift Cards

I LOVE to get gift cards.  While some people say, the giver didn't put any thought into the gift, I disagree.  They thought, I don't want to get her something she isn't going to use, like or have to waste time to return, so I'll get a gift card and she can get EXACTLY what she wants.  That to me, is the "perfect" gift.  But, recently the Duluth Police Department has issued a warning about gift cards.
