Walmart Announces Thanksgiving Plans For Stores In Minnesota + Wisconsin

For a while, not that long ago, there was a retail trend across the country where stores wouldn't wait until Black Friday to entice shoppers to visit and receive special deals. Instead, they'd be open on Thanksgiving, which was perhaps good for consumers but not so much for store staff.

However, once the pandemic hit in 2020, many stores that had been open on Thanksgiving began to back away from that practice. Now that the worst of the pandemic is several years in the past, would major retailers return to that practice?

When it comes to Walmart, that answer is a resounding no. This week, the popular retail chain made it official that they would be closed on Thanksgiving, which is November 23. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Walmart has been closed on the holiday.

Walmart U.S. President and CEO John Furner made the announcement in a LinkedIn post earlier this week, while also releasing a video on X to share the news with Walmart staff personally:

Hey Walmart associates, I am delighted to share that once again we'll be closing our stores for Thanksgiving this year. Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season and we want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones. Whether it's eating a great meal, watching some football, or whatever your traditions are. We all have so much to be thankful for this year and I'm especially thankful for the opportunity to work with all of you. Thank you so much.

Walmart will be open regular hours the day before and after Thanksgiving. Target, ALDI, and Costco are among other retailers that will also be closed on Thanksgiving this year.
