Tom’s Notes: Boys Hockey Tournament Kicks Off Today + More

The Hermantown Hawks were honored Tuesday at the school. They are again bound for the state tournament and Tuesday the Hawks held a send–off for the 3rd seeded team. Travis Koepke leads the Hawks in scoring with 65 points.

Hermantown 24–3–1 and will meet Lake Superior Conference foe, Duluth Marshall in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 1:30pm.

This is their 4th straight trip to state and 10th overall. The Hawks were at the state title game a year ago.

The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers were also on the road to St. Paul Tuesday.

The Toppers are the back to back 7A champions, and they were also honored Tuesday at the school, complete with the Topper Tunnel, a state tournament tradition at the school.

The Toppers are 16–12 on the year, and lost to the Hawks during the regular season 4–3.

For the Hilltoppers it’s their 7th overall appearance at the state tournament.

The Duluth East Greyhounds will also be at the state boy’s hockey tournament.

They will face Moorhead in the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon, a team they already beat this year during the regular season. The Hounds earned the #2 seed for the tournament. Their send–off to state will be this morning at 9:30am.

Hoops Time

The Esko Eskomos girl’s basketball team advanced to the finals of the Section 7AA tournament at UMD vs. Milaca with a 67-26 victory Tuesday night.

The win moves the Eskomos to 26 – 3 on the season and they will play Braham at UMD Thursday at 7:00 PM in a rematch of the last 3 Section finals.  The Eskomos were led by Marisa Shady’s 17 points and 4 assists.  Shady was joined in double figures for the  Eskomos with Claudia Turner’s 10 points.  Nine Eskomos scored on the night.  Makayla Forker was the lone Milaca player in double figures with 10 points.

Braham also won 91-30 over International Falls and they are now 29-0 on the year.  Rebekah Dalhman leads the state in scoring with 38 points per game and had 44 points on Tuesday night at Romano Gym.  She is a McDonalds High School All-American this year and will play college basketball at Vanderbilt.


Wild fall to Chicago

The NHL leading Chicago Blackhawk’s returned to home ice Tuesday looking to extend their record of points in a game.  They beat the Wild 5-3 on Tuesday, after falling behind 1-0 in the game.

The Blackhawks are now 20-0-3 overall and have a ten game winning streak.

Prior to the game, Marian Hossa of Chicago joined the 1000 Club in 1,000 NHL games.

He was honored with a silver hockey stick and a commemorative painting of himself holding the Stanley Cup they won in 2010.
