Temperatures around the Duluth - Superior area this morning were between -15 and -30 Fahrenheit before wind chill was factored in. In America's icebox, places like Embarass and International Falls saw temperatures below -40 before factoring any wind chill. These temperatures have been colder than places in the Arctic Circle lately, but it turns out there is another shocking fact about this frigid cold.
December around the Twin Ports is the first month of the winter season we're practically guaranteed to see measurable snow and temperatures below the freezing mark for days on end. We've seen plenty of both, but the long string of unseasonably cold temperatures so early in December has people wondering if we've made the record books.
Waterspouts are generally a warm-season phenomenon, appearing over large bodies of water like Lake Superior. Saturday afternoon (December 7), multiple cold air waterspouts were spotted near Knife River, north of Duluth on the Minnesota North Shore.
The multi-day snow storm that spanned December 2, 3, and 4, 2013 packed a serious punch, dropping feet of snow across the Twin Ports region. With parts of Duluth seeing over 2 feet of snow, where does this storm sit in the record books?
The first major snow storm of the season packed a serious punch, with waves of snow through the first week of December leaving Twin Ports and Northland residents digging out. So, how much snow did we get?
While many places in the region have already seen between 1 and 2 feet of snow (see latest snowfall totals here), another heavy round is expected to hit today, leaving a final storm total of between 2 and 3 feet through much of the area before the snow clears out and frigidly cold conditions slide into the area.
Some time back the Duluth Police Department had launched something similar to the CodeRED system called iWatch. That was recently scrubbed and this new system is now in place. It is a high-speed emergency notification service you can sign up for that will alert you to emergencies and inclement weather via telephone calls, text messages, and emails. It's important to have and I encourage you to sign up today.
