The unseasonably warm weather has been a detriment to many, cross country skiers, snowmobile enthusiasts, those that were hoping to see the Ice Caves again this year and anything that needs cold temps to survive like the ice sculpture in Superior and the Ice Castles in Eden Prairie.  Unfortunately, I received word that the Ice Castles would be closing early, here's the scoop.

A few years ago the Ice Castles were moved from the Mall of America and established in Eden Prairie, MN.  I think it's cool that people from the Twin Cities visit the Twin Ports to experience Bentleyville Tour of Lights and we can travel down to take in the amazing Ice Castles.  If you enjoy Lake Superior's Ice Caves you'll love this!

Duluth resident Steven Peterson was returning to the Twin Ports from a trip to Missouri, when he saw a deer trapped in the ice on Kettle River near Interstate 35 north of Sandstone. If you own a home or cabin near the water, you're probably noticing some cool looking ice formations, or ice ridges.  While they can look amazing, you probably already know that they can damage your property and shoreline.

Many news outlets reported over the weekend and through the day Monday about how Lake Superior was approaching almost full ice coverage for a second year in a row. Things certainly have changed a lot in a day.

Did you get a chance to check out the Ice Castle at the Mall of America last year? If your planning on going back this year, take note: it will be in a new location. If you didn't go you might want to consider it, especially if you went to Lake Superior's Ice Caves and enjoyed that.

With colder than normal weather and ice developing on area lakes sooner than usual, the temptation to venture out on area lakes has many folks itching to head out and enjoy some frozen-water sports. Officials caution enthusiasts that while it has been cold and ice is present, ice thicknesses are still on the low end on many lakes.

A mix of warm and cold weather across Minnesota has created inconsistent ice on lakes, rivers and ponds. The Department of Natural Resources is warning parents to keep an eye on their children this Thanksgiving, and all winter long, as they visit friends and family who live near bodies of water.

Waking up to temperatures near zero degrees this morning made it feel a lot more like January than mid-November. Beside making us all dream of warmer weather, those unseasonably cold temperatures are leading to abnormally early ice on the greatest of the Great Lakes as well.
