A main artery just outside of Duluth remains closed until road crews can repair the road after the massive flooding last week.

At noon today, June 23,  The American Red Cross closed its Scanlon shelter.  In their press release, Judy Hanne Gonzalez, executive director of the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross, stated that the shelter had no occupants last night.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the most recent $100 million damage estimate will be a lot lower than the final tally.  Just today Moose Lake forced evacuations and other areas like Barnum are still uncovering new damage.  The bottom line is despite the storms being over, there is still damage being done.

I am a huge animal lover.  My friends even joke about how meticulous I am when someone is watching my dog for me and I present to them my manifesto of rules.  I appreciate what PETA stands for, but I also know they sometimes do things just to keep their name in the press.  I think this may be one of those occasions.

Although we saw some sunshine today in the Northland, that doesn't take away from the fact that there are still those suffering from the storms and flooding this week.  The evacuations today of areas like Moose Lake attest to that.  Our media partners at Northlands News Center are reporting flood related road closures.

Contaminated water is always a major concern when cleaning up after flooding. The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District has acknowledged that sewer systems in the Twin Ports did overflow, making flood waters unsanitary in many cases. The Minnesota Department of Health offers the following tips for using bleach while cleaning up after the flood:

Last night at about 8:30 I noticed that I had some water starting to come up from the sewer drain.  Icky.  It started slow, but as the water continued, it just kept going and eventually got so bad that I had a foot of water in my basement floor overnight.  I know a lot of other people, including my neighbors, had it even worse.

I couldn't get the car out of our garage this morning, well, I could get it out, but there was no road to drive it on beyond our driveway.  We usually get rain trenches, but this time, the trench IS the road.  People across the Northland are dealing with flooding in their basements, some are being evacuated from their homes.  Travel is NOT advised!
