With so many highways across the area in tough shape and in construction projects, it's great when we can celebrate a new highway.  This is especially true when the new road means continued mining operations and the jobs that go with it.

The St. Louis County Board voted today to open to traffic the new County Road 102 in Mountain Iron. The vote clears the way for United States Steel Company (Minntac) to further its mining operations in the area of the old road.

Representatives of U.S. Steel Minntac, the Steelworkers Union, and the City of Mountain Iron will join St. Louis County leaders for a ribbon cutting today at 1 p.m. The event will be held on the new County Road 102 behind Walmart. Following the ribbon cutting, there will be gathering for coffee at the Mountain Iron Community Center.

Construction of the new road began in 2013, with Minntac covering the costs and overseeing the project.
