Darius Rucker certainly does his share when it comes to supporting our troops, regularly performing all over the world for American soldiers in such far-flung places as Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Japan and the Middle East. But he also wants everyday Americans to know how easy it is for them to do their part by supporting Operation Gratitude.

The ‘Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It’ singer tells AOL that his support for the troops is simple. “The reason I do it is because you should, ” he explains of his dedication to the soldiers. “They’re over there defending our freedoms and this great country that we have, and if I can go over there and give them an hour-and-a-half or two hours of home, that’s awesome for me.”

Rucker says he’s been surprised by how many familiar faces he has run into in his travels. “That was the thing that really amazed me,” he explains. “We’d show up at some base and they’d say, ‘There’s a guy here you went to college with.’ And sure enough, it was somebody that we knew. That happened so much.”

The former Hootie and the Blowfish frontman emphasizes that you don’t have to travel overseas — like he does — to support the troops, however. He’s working to promote Operation Gratitude, which provides care packages for soldiers stationed all over the world. As Rucker puts it, “When you’re over there for a year-and-a-half and a box comes from home, and it’s got reminders of home, they love that.”
