Moviegoers this weekend will have a choice of three new films at our local Marcus Theatres.
Three very different films will bow this weekend in our local Marcus Theatres.
The sci-fi/fantasy thriller ‘Apollo 18‘ uses a faux-documentary style to explore a covert trip to the moon that reveals disturbing new life forms, while Helen Mirren’s ‘The Debt‘ sees three former Mossad agents haunted by a dangerous secret mission from 30 years prior, and horror-flick ‘Shark Night 3D‘ features seven vacationers — most of whom will presumably become food — encountering shark-infested waters.
In a weekend that saw many East Coast theaters closed because of Hurricane Irene, ‘The Help’ remained atop the box office for the second week in a row.
The film, based on the best-selling book of the same name, has now earned a total of $96.6 million.
In its second week of release, strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews propelled ‘The Help’ past ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend, while ‘Apes’ moved to the number two slot.
‘The Help’ earned $20.5 million, while ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ pulled in $16.3 million.
Could ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ be the surprise blockbuster of the summer? Critics certainly seem to think so.
The James Franco vehicle, which serves as a reboot of the classic ‘Apes’ franchise, is receiving strong reviews thus far – or at least stronger than most had expected.
This weekend, two new movie releases at our local Marcus Theatres will try to dethrone ‘Harry Potter’ as king of the box office – one about a patriotic super-hero, the other about two friends who think they can actually make casual sex work.
The first is ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’ In the film, Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers, a scrawny guy who volunteers for a top-secret scientific experiment that transforms his body and enables him to join the US Army in its crusade against the Nazis.
The ‘Transformers’ are back for two and a half hours worth of action in ‘Dark of the Moon,’ the third movie in Michael Bay’s mega-blockbuster franchise is in our 3 local Marcus Theatres this weekend.
Reviews for the movie have been a bit on the negative side; but with it already pulling in $13.5 million on Tuesday, it’s looking to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, movie of the year.
Another sequel cruises into Twin Ports Marcus Theatres this weekend by way of Pixar’s ‘Cars 2,’ with Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) back for another fast-paced adventure – this time, at the first-ever World Grand Prix.
Reviews haven’t been too kind for the movie, but given Pixar’s recent successes, ‘Cars 2′ should have no problem taking the number-one spot at the box office.
Moviegoers will have much to choose from this weekend – the first being the much-anticipated blockbuster ‘The Green Lantern,’ starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.
Though the movie wasn’t exactly praised by critics, the hype surrounding the comic-book adaptation should translate into a lot of, well, green at the box office.
Also opening this weekend: the family-friendly vehicle ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ starring funnyman Jim Carrey in the title role.

Aliens are creeping back into theaters this week with the release of J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated 'Super 8,' about a group of kids who captures a mysterious train crash on their video cameras in 1979.

In an already jam-packed summer movie season, director Matthew Vaughn hopes to impress audiences with his latest movie, 'X-Men: First Class,' a reboot of the Marvel movie series that takes fans back to the beginning (or in this case, the Cold War-era '60s).
Already, the film has impressed critics; it currently has over a 95 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But will audiences flock to see it in our local Marcus Theatres? We'll know in a few days.
In the meantime, check out a list of new movies opening Friday, plus what's still playing in Marcus Theatres, to help you decide what to see this weekend.
This weekend, moviegoers will see the return of some familiar faces at our local Marcus Theatres, starting with the boys from 'The Hangover.'
In the sequel to the 2009 box-office smash, the gang finds itself on a similar adventure to their last blackout in Vegas - only this time, they're in Thailand.
Also in playing at Marcus Theatres this weekend: 'Kung Fu Panda 2,' featuring the voice talents of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and more.
