A Hummingbird Clearwing Moth Freaked Me Out in My Own Yard, Other Sightings in the Northland

With the excessive heat we've had in the Northland the flowers in my yard have started to get crispy.  I was out Sunday evening picking off the ones that I knew couldn't be revived.  This critter flew up next to me and started drinking nectar from the flowers and it was NOT afraid of me.  Ken tells me his dad just saw one of these for the first time in his yard last week.  Are we being infested?

Douglas County Quarantined, Officials Confirm the Presence of Emerald Ash Borer in the City of Superior

My husband and I have a wood burner so we are very conscious of where we can get the wood we burn.  We found that there are certain counties in Wisconsin that won't allow the transport of wood across county lines due to gypsy moths and the emerald ash borer beetle.  I was surprised to hear that they are now as close as the City of Superior!

The City of Duluth Makes Street Tree Planting Affordable by Sharing the Cost with Residents to Expand the Urban Forest

We lovingly called the tree on our boulevard the "Pee Tree", because it was the only tree we had that the dog could reach on his chain and he would go for it EVERY time.  Unfortunately, that particular dog AND the tree are gone.  The dog got old, the tree, not sure, but the City took it down and now we're left with the decision on what to do to replace it.  With this new program, we just may be partnering with the City to take on this task.  You can too and help restore our urban forest.  Here's how:

OFF Backyard Pretreat Backyard Control Product Review

Last week the mosquitoes were so bad in our backyard that we were forced into the house.   We couldn't spend more than 30 seconds outdoors without at least 1 mosquito bite.  More than a few minutes outside, and we were doing a rendition of riverdance trying to swat the bugs.   I decided action needed to be taken, so I headed to the store and purchased OFF Backyard Control, not sure if it would help.  I figured at about $9 a bottle it was worth the risk.

Tomato’s Short Growing Season isn’t a Problem in the Northland if You Grow Them Upside Down

I have made several attempts at growing tomatoes.  It seems that everyone ELSE I know doesn't have a problem, but we all agree that the season (especially THIS year) is much too short to grow an abundance of tomatoes to can, eat fresh and make salsa and sauces.  I came across Topsy Turvey, a unique twist on how to grow tomatoes that just might make the difference.  Have you used it?

Did You Know You Need an Agate Picking Permit in Carlton County?

As a child growing up in Wrenshall I did a lot of agate picking.  My parents started me out at the young age of three, agate picking in the various gravel pits in our area.  I'm not sure if a permit was needed then, but as I was checking out the Carlton County Transportation website, I came across the information I felt I should share with other "rock hounds".
