Financial Planning: Where Do You Spend Each Dollar? You’ll Be Shocked!

This is my actual wallet.  It has $1 dollar in it, and a bunch of receipts.  That's why today my wife and I took a big step into adulthood:  we met with a financial adviser.  Some day we would like to retire, and that's kind of what I thought this would all be about.  I was surprised to learn that it's more than saving money for retirement.  It's also about having more money today.  What?  Is this freaking magic or something?

Labor Department Wants To Prevent Children From Working On Family Farm

My chores were much different than that of my friend Caroline Laveau, but she grew up on a huge dairy farm in Wrenshall, and I only had to dust and vacuum.  I enjoyed my time on the farm and think that it taught me a lot!  Responsibility and the meaning of the words, "hard work", because it wasn't always fun, or easy and "time to play" didn't come until AFTER chores were completed.  Personally, I think this is wrong and don't think that families with farms can make it without the family working together.  Do you agree?

How Facebook Is Draining Your Wallet

I know everyone has a scheme to make money, and Facebook is no different. Instead of clogging up my space with ads, why not charge other businesses that are posting for free. Ok, just an idea. Duluth Mayor Ness Proclaims April 12 “Community Development Day”

We aren't always aware of the programs available to us through the City and the Government.  But if you need help, you should really look into it, you'd be surprised what you find.  In fact, since 1875, there has been the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in place that has provided local governments with resources to help people with low and moderate income.

Self Checkouts Becoming More Common In Duluth/Superior: Like Them Or Not?

Yesterday, I was heading towards the checkouts when I saw long lines of people waiting for a cashier.  Of course there were multiple self checkouts with shorter lines of people.  I still think these things scare a lot of people, worried about trying something new

Minnesota Waitress Sues After Police Seize $12,000

Struggling mom has a very strange encounter with a customer and is left with a box.  Box contains $12,000!  I think the key to this story is that she notified the police right away and they told her if nobody claimed it within a certain time she could have it.  That time passed and they extended it.  That extended time passed and they said she couldn't have it because it's "drug money".   Because they didn't disclose that right away, it sounds like they're making up the rules on the fly so I can see her reasoning behind the lawsuit.

A couple of questions come to mind.  First would if this happened to you would you notify police or just take it as offered?  Second, if the series of events this woman experienced happened to you, would you sue or just take the police offer?  Here's the whole story:

Red Flags That Will Get You Audited

I'm busy finishing my taxes and looking for anything that will help me. I read that most people don't turn in their taxes till the last few days, so if you are like me and still working on them. Here's some tips.
Taxpayers overall face a low audit risk: The IRS audited 1.1% of all individual tax returns filed in 2010, or 1.6 million returns of 141 million filed.

The vast majority of those audits — 1.2 million — were done by mail. Just 392,000 involved an in-person meeting with the IRS. That’s not necessarily good news.

New Office Furniture For 10 Duluth City Workers: $90,000

I can see why this is drawing criticism since Duluth has been in such a penny-pinch mode as of late to get back on track.   I agree that people need good working spaces, but perhaps this could have been introduced in a better way to avoid instant backlash.  Where there bids to get average prices from multiple vendors?  Before you present such things, especially in politics, you have to be prepared for those who will push back.
