Ken Hayes

Hello!  I'm one half of the breakfast club on B105.  Thanks for checking out my page!  Here's a little about me:Background:I grew up on the Iron Range and have lived in quite a few places since, including the Twin Cities, Fairmont MN, and of course the great Twin Ports.  I feel at home in the Duluth/Superior Area and I've always missed the Northland when I haven't been here.I graduated from Virginia High School, and then went on to receive my degree in Communications from Brown College.  I took my first gig in Radio at a small station in southern Minnesota.  After 3 years, I had to move back.  I got sick of corn and pigs and not much else.  Luckily, I was able to land this job at B105 in 2007.  Since then, I've had the biggest changes in my life, including getting married, buying a house, and actually growing up.  (Cathy Kates would argue with that.)Here's some questions that listeners often ask me:Do you like Country Music?- Of course I do!  I have a pretty well rounded taste in music, but country is my favorite.  I also like a lot of old school country.  Not just your typical Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson/Waylon Jennings "outlaw stuff" but also classics from Conway Twitty, Vern Gosdin, Don Williams, etc.  My favorite artists that are popular now are probably Jason Aldean, Jamey Johnson, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, and more.  Besides country, I have a pretty good handle on classic rock too.Do you and Cathy get along?Cathy and I love to give each other a hard time on the Breakfast Club, and we wouldn't be able to if we didn't enjoy each other's company.  There are times when she really does drive me crazy and I know I drive her crazy sometimes (usually I try to :).What's the best part of your job?-It's fun!  We work a lot of really screwy hours, and we aren't millionaires, but it doesn't feel like work.  And that's pretty cool. What time do you get up in the morning?4:30am - And that really stinks.  Thank god I'm a guy and can get ready for the day in only 20 minutes. (includes shower, shave, and dressing time)Send me an e-mail.  I'd love to hear from you!  And thanks for listening!

Will Ice Out Happen In Time For MN Fishing Opener? View These Webcams of Popular Lakes

Really the only way to know for sure if ice is going to be off the lakes is to see it up to the minute for yourself.  Temperatures have been warming up, and ice has been deteriorating, but so far, you can see ice on just about all of these webcams.  Take a look for yourself at some of Northern Minnesota's most popular fishing destinations.

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Doesn’t Want “Fat Chicks” To Wear Their Clothes, What Do You Think? [POLL]

Found this on an article today from elitedaily.com.  Basically, the whole jist of the story is the CEO of Ambercrombie & Fitch, Jeffries, doesn't want fat kids wearing his clothes.  He's targeting the cool, popular, in shape, all American kids.  That's why you won't find XL and XXL sizes in his stores.   And women, no pants over the size of 10.

Ok, I know it looks like I have a crazy obsession with Kellie Pickler, but she's big news right now!  I'm hoping that Kellie will find some great success with her next single that's coming out next week during the peak of her "Dancing With The Stars" competition.  Here is Kellie talking about what the song is about and means to her.

Study Shows Gun Homicides Has Dropped 49% Since 1990′s, Despite What Media May Have You Believe

This was a surprising study I found today.  Modern news media including 24 hour news channels, internet news sites, etc cover the mass shootings and gun murders so extensively that we feel like gun violence is soaring out of control.  In reality, gun homicide is down 49% since it peaked in the mid 1990's.

Meet Animal Allies Pet of the Week “Merlin”

It's not too often we have a kitten featured as the Animal Allies "Pet of the Week."  Merlin is just over a month old and doesn't even weigh 2 pounds yet, but his personality is already starting to show.   Also, besides Merlin, there is a Mother's Day promotion going on where adult cats are only $5 to adopt!

Kellie Pickler Dances Wonderfully Again, Len Gets Booed for Low Score [VIDEO]

Last night Kellie Pickler danced stunningly and nearly perfect once again, doing the Viennese Waltz, and later the Paso Doble.  Everyone loved both dances, except for Len who puzzled everyone with his low score of 7 on the Doble.  I have my own theories.  Watch the videos and see for yourself.

Like National Geographic’s Brain Games? Try These Tests [VIDEO]

Last week I finally caught the National Geographic series "Brain Games" on TV.  I think I have a pretty strong brain, so I thought I'd be up for the challenges that they show you.  I'll admit, I was stumped quite a bit, or rather tricked.  That's what the show is about, exploiting the weaknesses of your brain, but also helping you to train your brain.

2013 Wisconsin Fishing Opener Was A Cold Icy One to Remember

Months ago me and some friends made plans to fish the Wisconsin fishing opener.   We kept the date open, got babysitters lined up, bought our licenses and eagerly waited to get back on the water.  However, it was apparent last week that we were going to have to change plans with the bizarre late spring we've had.

Another Hilarious “Bad Lip Reading” Spoofs “The Walking Dead” [VIDEO]

I love "Bad Lip Reading."  This time they took on the hugely popular AMC show, "The Walking Dead."   Which, if you didn't know, I blog a lot about.  My favorite line is when Daryl says, "I didn't mean to mess up your potato basket."  Haha, take a look.

How Young Is Too Young For Your Kids To Handle Firearms? [POLL]

Tragedy struck the other day as a 5 year old boy shot his sister with his youth .22 rifle he got as a gift from his parents.  Long story short, his mother left the kids unattended for 3 minutes, and the 5 year old grabbed the .22 that still had a shell in it and fatally wounded his sister.  How terrible.  Right off the bat, multiple gun safety rules were broken, and this could have easily been avoided.  Nevertheless, it's a terrible tragedy and I can't imagine the pain that family is going through.
