It's been an annoying problem that we've been experiencing lately - trash scavengers.  If you take a drive down the alleys around town, you'll see them.  Our bags have been ripped open and dug through.  Who does this?  Who actually digs in garbage?  What could be of value in there?  Of course there is the concern about identify theft, so we've been shredding our bills and most mail.  How do deter these people?  Here's some ideas I've put into practice. 1.  Cat poop on top. This is actually kind of fun.  We have to clean the litter box usually, so now whenever I take out the garbage, I also clean out the litter box.  Then I sprinkle the cat poop all over the top of the garbage bags.  If we had a dog, I would use the same method.  If they still want to dig through actual animal crap to get garbage, go ahead.

2.  Rip open you're own bags. Once you put them in the trash, tear them open.  It will look like it's already been gone through.

3.  Don't bring your garbage can out until garbage day. People are less likely to go into your yard or the back door of your house and dig through garbage.

4.  Call the cops on them. We have police for a reason, and going through people's garbage is illegal.

5.  Fish guts. I do a lot of fishing, usually I can have some fish guts around.  That'll be nice and gross to throw over the top of all the trash.
