5 Things to Expect During the First Trimester – From A Guy’s View

My wife and I broke the news yesterday that we are expecting a baby due in late October.  Because the first trimester is over and the risk of miscarriage greatly reduces, we decided it was time to share the exciting news.  However, it’s been tough keeping it a secret.  There’s also some other tough parts those first three months, like dealing with hormones.

1.  Your wife may not be the same person for a while.

I fell in love with my wife because she was so caring, loving, and laid back.  Then one day that person vanished completely off the face of this earth for a short period of time.  I don’t know what I did, but I was sorry anyway. Thankfully she came back.

2.  You may be having a fight that you don’t know that you are having.

We spent an entire day fighting on a Saturday.  However, I didn’t know this until she told me two days later.  What were we fighting about? She wasn’t feeling well, so I thought I would give her some space.  She took that as me wanting nothing to do with her and that I no longer loved her and wanted nothing to do with her. I was just eating chips watching TV in another room.  I apologized.  I don’t know why.  But that’s what you do.

3.  Doctor visits just became way weirder.

We had our first appointment at the OBGYN at 9 weeks.  I didn’t know what to expect, but being the good husband I want to go to as many visits with her as possible.

OH MY GOD!  The things they do in there… yikes!  I stared uncomfortably at the corner of the ceiling while she had her legs up in the air and the nurse practitioner (under the hood.)  Then that first ultrasound thing they have that looks like a ray gun with a condom on it.  That’s scary.  My wife is so brave.  Didn’t even bother her.

4.  You get a little flutter in you heart, and your manliness is checked.

I always heard that it’s a “magical” feeling when you first see the heart beat.  I thought that was crap.  Until I saw the heartbeat and I got a funny feeling in my heart.   The feeling was kinda like going over a roller coaster, falling in love, and when your credit card gets declined.  Kind of a mix of all three, but definitely a good feeling.  I’m a softy after all.

5.  The mother of your child is doing a lot, even if it looks like she isn’t.

My wife was and still is at times nauseous and feeling the morning sickness all the time.  (By the way, morning sickness is a stupid name because it happens all day or whenever.)  She would lie on the couch, sleep some, or just go to a quiet place in the house because she didn’t feel good.

So inevitably, I ended up picking up more chores around the house.  It’s tough to remind yourself that she’s not being lazy, she just doesn’t feel good.  When you feel like throwing up, do you have a lot of energy?

So the best thing you can do is keep your mouth shut and do your part and support her as much as you can.  Remember, she has another being sucking life out of her, so you can do the stupid laundry.

Oh and by the way if you’re reading this, I love you honey.  Very much.
