The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed white-nose syndrome, a disease that is dangerous and usually fatal to hibernating bats.

The disease was confirmed at the Lake Vermilion - Soudan Underground Mine State Park after several hundred bats were found dead near the main entrance to the mine.

Although the disease is transmitted primarily from bat to bat, people can inadvertently carry fungal spores to other caves on clothing and caving gear.  The mine has been available for public tours, and will remain open in the future.  However, procedures will be stressed during tours to prevent spores from spreading.
