We've talked previously on air and even in my blogs about the Tower-Soudan underground mine.   Last time my family and I visited in 2013 we had to walk across a special mat that was too remove any fungus spores from our shoes.

The goal was to prevent the white fungus that causes a disease from making it's way down the shaft.   Unfortunately, there are bats that have died at the mine now, according to a press release from the Minnesota DNR.

The mine tours will continue to do the best they can at preventing further contamination, and people are urged to not where the same clothes they wore in another cave or mine previously.  Even after washing the clothes, the spores could be present.

The disease is not harmful to humans or pets, just bats.  And a healthy bat population is good for our eco system.  Just remember, bats eat mosquitos!
