Most of us only think about the food shelves in our area around the holidays.  But the sad truth is that the food shelf is important to many Northland families year round.  March is FoodShare month and is important in the fact that the donations are matched!  Please keep this in mind during your next trip to the grocery store and be generous.

March is exciting because during the MN FoodShare campaign, each dollar donated by the public is matched and that is huge for the 300 food shelves across our state that look to keep their shelves stocked.

According to CHUM, they feed 2,300 households or 7% of the population in our area.  Surprising isn't it.  You never know if your neighbors, friends, even your family members are hungry and in need of using a local food shelf.  I just rounded up at the check-out at the Whole Foods Co-Op this past weekend, that's one way you can contribute.  So many area businesses, school and organizations have given of their time to raise donations to the cause. Church groups, school classrooms, clubs, you all have the ability to come up with a fun way to incorporate raising money or collecting food during the month of March and help fill the local food shelves.

Let's join together and top last year's donations of $123,000  and 26,645 pounds of food.  For 2016, they hoping to collect $130,000 and 30,000 pounds of food.   There, a goal has been set, let's raise the bar.  You can double your donation by making sure you donate in the month of March.

You can do something right now by making a monetary donation to the Salvation Army.
