There are people that put things off all the time. Sometimes, you can't file on time for some circumstance. What if you don't file by the deadline? The Government will send over a guy who will break your legs, right? No, you would be surprised how long you have, if you don't have to pay out.

According to TurboTax, 2016 tax returns that are due a refund have until April 18, 2020 (October 16, 2020 with an extension) to be filed with the IRS before the statute of limitations on the refund runs out. If you don't file by then, the U.S. Treasury simply keeps your "donation."

The key here is, file! If you file late, and you owe money? The late filing penalty could be 10 times higher than a late payment penalty. The longer you wait the worse it gets.
