Just before we talked with WDIO Meterologist Ben Dery from Good Morning Northland, my husband called and asked me to pick up a couple of pairs of solar eclipse glasses from the planetarium at UMD

He said that Ben had reminded him that the partial solar eclipse will be taking place Thursday afternoon.  With the rain we're expecting tonight into tomorrow the Breakfast Club asked Ben if we're going to get a chance to see it.  He is optimistic that we will be able to; however, you should wear eye protection.

Thursday the Northland is going to experience a rare event, a partial solar eclipse.  Most of North America will see the shadow when the moon passes between the sun and the earth.

According to Ben the eclipse should start around 4:20 on Thursday afternoon with the best viewing at 5:32p.  The sun is expected to set at 6:07p.  Special eclipse glasses should be used for viewing so you don't hurt your eyes. Such glasses are available at the UMD planetarium, which I'll visiting upon my husband's request :)

UMD Planetarian Program Director Jesse Vetsch provides another option for viewing:

"If you don't have the viewing glasses, you can take a shoe box, poke a small pinhole, face it at the sun, and it will shoot the light inside the box. That will give you a good view of the sun and the moon's shadow."

Enjoy the partial solar eclipse from some of the "best seats in the house"!
