I didn't even KNOW what Buckthorn  or Japanese Knotweed was, let alone know they were dangerous.  I thought buckthorn looked pretty until I began to read that they can choke out our native plants and make our wildlife ill.  The City of Duluth is looking for volunteers to help remove a couple different species of invasive plants from our parks in the upcoming weeks.  Can you help with this important task?

Your volunteerism will help support the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation's Duluth Invaders service and their initiative to tackle invasive plant species. Throughout this month and early November, volunteers will help remove Buckthorn and Japanese Knotweed from various park locations. All tools and equipment are provided. Just in case they need to get a ahold of you if the service locations change or the weather poses a problem, they as that you register. Here's all the details.

These volunteer events take place every Tuesday from tomorrow through November 11, 5:00-6:30 PM. Locations and dates are:

  • Oct. 7 | Lakewalk & 21st Ave E
  • Oct. 14 | Hartley Nature Center
  • Oct. 21 | Western Waterfront & Pulaski
  • Oct. 28 | Irving Park & Main Street
  • Nov. 4 | Chester Park (parking lot)
  • Nov. 11 | Lester Park (parking lot)

The Duluth Invaders service initiative is dedicated to slowing the spread of terrestrial, invasive plants through education, eradication and restoration. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and should dress appropriately for the weather.

If you should have questions or would like to register call Cheryl at 218.730.4334 or you can reach her by email at cskafte@duluthmn.gov.
