Vince Gill used his stage time at UMG's annual CRS luncheon at the Ryman Auditorium on Tuesday (Feb. 9) to perform a brand-new song, “Sad One Comin’ On (a Song for George Jones)."

Gill joined more than a dozen artists, including Chris Stapleton, Eric Church and Keith Urban, in performing for radio programmers, broadcasters and journalists as part of the annual event. The song is on his upcoming new album, Down to My Last Bad Habit.

"Watching Chris inspired me to sing this song ...," Gill told the crowd before beginning the song. "It’s a song I wrote in tribute to the great George Jones, and I just felt like, standing over in the wings, watching [Stapleton] sing ... it reminded me of what it must have been like the first time we heard George Jones sing."

Gill's upcoming release also includes a collaboration with Little Big Town, which will be the project's first single.

"We’re going to change the name of our group to LGBT," the country icon quipped. "We’re going to find a pretty cool audience."

While onstage, the 58-year-old Gill recalled making his first album 42 years ago, when his musical career was just getting started.

"We made this record with a little band we had when I was still in high school, and we put it out there. We’d sell it at the shows we were doing, and radio started playing it. And there I was, a 17-year-old kid, and what it did ... is it instilled something in me as a young kid," Gill explained. "It instilled hope. And I’ve never, ever lost sight of that hope in all of these 42 years I’ve been making records. I don’t think I ever really had much of an expectation of getting a record played, but I never doubted that I had hope that I would."

Down to My Last Bad Habit, which also includes guest vocals by Cam on "I'll Be Waiting for You," is filled with songs that, although not all within the country paradigm, are a clear reflection of where Gill is right now in his personal and professional life.

“All this is is where I am today,” he tells USA Today. “People always say their newest album is the best they’ve ever made. That should be the case. You should get better at this. So hopefully, this is the best record I’ve ever done. My ears do tell me I’m singing better than I ever have, playing better than ever and writing better songs.”

Down to My Last Bad Habit will be released on Feb. 12.
