With road construction back in full swing, it's VERY important for drivers to understand this.  Use both lanes during backups, even if it says lane closed ahead.  You are suppose to wait until you reach the point where the lane ends.  It's called the Zipper Merge, and the effectiveness is demonstrated here.

Yesterday as I was heading home around 1pm over the Blatnik Bridge, people weren't using this method and traffic was backed up all the way up into Piedmont Avenue.  I think the common problem is that people don't understand this is how they do it, and drivers get ticked off when someone passes them on the right, and don't want to let them back in.  I know I got some dirty looks!
