I want to start this blog out by telling you that while this is factual, it's based on what my friends in Wrenshall and Duluth have told me and NOT from any local police department press release.  In two separate instances, in two separate communities I've had friends tell me of shady visitors to their homes asking puzzling questions and that sparked speculation.  I blogged the info they shared with me and got a lot of different responses.  I thought I should share some of the info to put you at ease or so you know in advance in case you hear a knock on your door.

Read what my friends said that made me feel like I should warn you about these people knocking on your door in my previous post.

Now I want to share some of the responses with you, some positive, some negative.

The first was friends in Wrenshall, however, my other friend who lives in Duluth also had this happen and Peter responded on FB with:

"Thanks for posting that about the sketchy dude. Kim C. had something like that happen over the weekend and another of Courtney's friend, same thing in Hermantown."

So, again, this is happening in neighborhoods across the Northland.  Here are other responses I had.

Renae wrote:  "I just read the article you wrote and the name of the company that may be in the area is Southwest Advantage.  They have stopped at my house which is in Wrenshall. They have been here in past years. This company hires college students in the summers to sell their books and they usually send people from the south up here and the people from the north go south. The guy that stopped at my house is staying with a family in Aiken. I can tell you that they know names of kids because when they are at houses they get people to spill to them names of others they can call on. They even make them find a place to stay with a family that they may be knocking on. I know a young man who did get a job with them and he didn't like it and wanted out and it was very difficult to get out."

Garrett responded:  "The suspicious activity sounds like an independent contractor selling books for a company called "southwestern advantage".... I know some families from Holyoke and Barnum who have purchased books and have received their books. They ask a lot of questions to lead to another house or sale. The man that came to my house sold Jesse some books, listed his kids by name and explained why Marie was so interested in the books. It is legit. It would be a hard business. The books are good. My inlaws also purchased books and like them. Google the company or search out on fb "the bookman" you will most likely see a picture of someone who has visited your house. The salesmen call it an internship for college students/ earn money for college type job."

However, several of my Facebook friends are concerned and/or had negative feelings:

Like Ashton:  I read your blog about the man on the bike. Does anyone have more information on his description? We live on west skyline and had a man sit outside of our house on a Sunday morning for over an hour watching us and riding back and forth. Less than two week later we had our bbq grill and patio furniture stolen. Maybe they were unrelated but I was just curious if this man fit the same description."

Jeana said:  "We had someone to our house Tamarack area as well "selling books" and wanted to come in and kept coming closer to the house when I had already said clearly NO not interested!! I had to repeat my self several times before he left. Creepy!"

Jolene says: " Legit or not always be careful there are crazy people in this world that start a criminal life by first gaining your trust! And I have NOT heard one reason he has my kids names ages and grade in school!? Schools are not allowed to release information like that so where did they get it from? Thanks for the info."

Jade:  " I had two gentleman stop by earlier this summer, on foot, peddling the same things. Some kind of "College Prep" book course. I declined, but they wanted to know who else had children on the block. They did know info on my kids (ages, names) and though they were "nice" enough fellas, I wasn't impressed by their approach at all."

I wanted you to be aware that this is happening and that the locations are not isolated.  They are moving through the Northland.  It's your choice if you wish to buy their books or whatever they are selling, but bottom line is we all have to be very careful who we open our home to, give our personal information to and we need to watch out for each other.   You just never know what their intentions are.
