According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, July is the peak month for home fires in the United States and grilling plays a role in that, with gas grills playing a larger role than charcoal.

A key thing you can do to avoid having your cookout end with a call to the fire department is to check your surroundings to make sure there is nothing flammable too close to your grill.

Here are some other fire prevention tips while grilling, courtesy of the Department of Public Safety:

  • Never use a grill indoors and don’t leave it
    unattended.
  • When lighting a grill, keep the top open. If it does
not light in the first several attempts, wait five
    minutes before trying again.
  • Check the grill’s tubes and hoses before using a
grill that has not been used in a while.
  • Keep your grill clean.
  • When grilling, place the grill away from your
home, deck railings and out from under eaves.
