We drove past the Portland Malt Shoppe on Superior Street and I was surprised to see the OPEN sign illuminated!  It sparked excitement because that's the gateway to summer, but also evoked a giggle since we had been receiving small snow squalls all day.

Of course, NOW is the time to go get your favorite frozen confectionery, before the main tourist season starts because once that hits the lines at the malt shoppe get L O N G!

It is truly historic.  According to the Portland Malt Shoppe website, it was built back in 1921 as a gas station for the Northwestern Oil Company.  Then the 70's housed a dress boutique called the Portland Village.  I wondered why "Portland" and they had the answer to that question too.

Turns out that the neighborhood there used to be called Portland. But there was several cities by that name and that frustrated the village postmaster and spoke up.  Village Officials listened to his concerns, discussed with the neighboring village, Duluth, and they decided it best that they merge.

While you're enjoying your floats, malts and dishes of ice cream you can take a jaunt on the Lakewalk.  Head downtown Duluth or sit and enjoy the view of the ships, sail and fishing boats utilizing beautiful Great Lake, Lake Superior.

They say your favorite ice cream defines your personality, mine is Peppermint Bon Bon. I looked my personality up and BOOOOO!  It says I'm argumentative.  I would have to argue with that!

So, what is your favorite flavor? Anybody argumentative like me and like Peppermint Bon Bon?  Let's go grab a shake and debate something!!
