The Northland’s Closest Smallest Towns, Can You Guess What They Are
I often get teased because I grew up in the "small town" of Wrenshall. Honestly, wouldn't want it any other way! My class of (year not important) had 17 graduates. When I tell people that they promptly respond with the number of graduates in their class, well into the hundreds. So, what are the smallest communities near the Twin Ports? Can you guess?
- 1
Floodwood
There's a couple of campgrounds in Floodwood and I was recently at the new Minit Mart's re-grand opening.
- 2
Wrenshall
Besides a natural gas plant, there is a K-12 school with a pool, a volunteer fire department, a restaurant that my high school friend Caroline and her husband own called the Brickyard and a local Pub named Bricks.
- 3
McGregor
This small town was on everybody's radar during the MN Fishing Opener this year because they hosted the MN Governor's Fishing Opener. It was cold, but the community support to welcome the Governor was warm!

Mahtowa
This is an unincorporated community in Carlton County that is home to TJ's Country Corner. The town doesn't even have a post office, but it does have some of the best tasting brats around!
- 5
Cromwell
While there is only a little over 230 people living in this community, they do have post office. Their Municipal Liquor store was established in 1946 and they have a beautiful park pavilion available for rent.

The Smallest Town In Minnesota
It's called Funkley, MN and you can count the population on one hand (if you have 4 fingers and a thumb). Yup, the census says their population is 5. But, that doesn't stop them from having a bar. Heck, if you stop for a drink you just might get to meet all of them!
