Summertime is here, and to celebrate, the Duluth YMCA is giving away some free youth summer memberships to keep kids active and give them something to do this summer.

The annual City of Duluth's Parks and Rec Sand Modeling Contest and Water Safety Expo is right around the bend on Park Point on Thursday, July 20.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate with rays of sunshine and comfy temps.  Last year they had to postpone the event until a later date because of the havoc that an early morning storm inflicted on the Northland.

The Northland had been warned of excessive heat and many people were preparing by getting their fans and air conditioners in place.  However, no one was expecting the extent of damage from the early morning storm that surprised us with downed trees and power lines. The end of the school year is near and if you're like me when my daughter was young, you're too busy to research and find exciting constructive things for your kids to do to fill their time this summer.  Since my daughter Kylee is graduating from UMD in May, I have time to do the research and help you out.

YMCA's Mentor Duluth stopped in our studios recently hoping to spread the word about becoming a mentor.  They are in their 'March Into Mentoring' push and working towards getting 31 new mentors signed up in the month of March.

I was there to witness the debut of Underwater Hockey. I met Kurt and Alan who told me a little of the history of the game and also put on a clinic and let people try the sport. People were shown the equipment and worked with some of the experienced players to learn the game.
