A new Division I men's hockey conference, officially announced Saturday, officially got a name Wednesday at a joint press conference with six new member schools that will open play in 2013-14.

Members of a new six-team Division I men’s conference officially let the rest of the hockey world in on the news Saturday. A joint press release announced the yet-to-be-named league, which will start in 2013-14 and include Minnesota Duluth. The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team won it’s first ever NCAA National Championship on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Bulldogs beat Michigan 3-2 in overtime to claim its second national championship this year, the football team won the Division II National Championship in December.

I came across this nice article about Bill Watson, an assistant coach currently for the Bulldogs who of course was on the 1984 team that suffered a heartbreaking loss in their bid for a national championship. I remember watching that game and I think anyone who did feels a little redemption now, if not to the degree of someone who lived it.

The pain had lingered for 27 years, deep in Bill Watson's heart. He will never forget the precise moment when it evaporated: 9:17 p.m. Saturday evening, when Kyle Schmidt buried the puck in the Michigan net.

I was a goal off on my 3-1 prediction, but UMD finished off their post season run by defeating Michigan 3-2 on a pretty OT goal. What an amazing finish to the season as our Bulldogs bring home a national championship.
Much attention was paid to Minnesota-Duluth's dynamic top line of Jack Connolly, Justin Fontaine and Mike Connolly entering the Frozen Four, and rightfully so considering their 172 points this season were the most by any trio in college hockey.

Yet the Bulldogs have plenty of show horses, none more valuable than Kyle Schmidt.

Schmidt scored the goal Saturday night they'll be talking about for years in northern Minnesota, converting 3 minutes, 22 seconds into overtime to defeat Michigan 3-2 and give Minnesota-Duluth its first NCAA Division I men's hockey championship.
