Douglas County Quarantined, Officials Confirm the Presence of Emerald Ash Borer in the City of Superior

My husband and I have a wood burner so we are very conscious of where we can get the wood we burn.  We found that there are certain counties in Wisconsin that won't allow the transport of wood across county lines due to gypsy moths and the emerald ash borer beetle.  I was surprised to hear that they are now as close as the City of Superior!

The City of Duluth Makes Street Tree Planting Affordable by Sharing the Cost with Residents to Expand the Urban Forest

We lovingly called the tree on our boulevard the "Pee Tree", because it was the only tree we had that the dog could reach on his chain and he would go for it EVERY time.  Unfortunately, that particular dog AND the tree are gone.  The dog got old, the tree, not sure, but the City took it down and now we're left with the decision on what to do to replace it.  With this new program, we just may be partnering with the City to take on this task.  You can too and help restore our urban forest.  Here's how:

Can You Help With The City Of Duluth’s First Tree Inventory Since 1994?

I thought, "Now I've heard of everything!" But, there is some logic in taking tree inventory.  The  information gathered will be used to determine our species diversity, age diversity of the trees, calculate benefits of our urban forest, such as lbs. of carbon sequestered, and the number of gallons of storm water runoff avoided because of the trees, which amounts to more than a million gallons a year. The collected information will also be used to determine where the City can plant more trees in the future.

Kindergarten Teacher At Stowe Wins First maurices Service Learning Grant

Congratulations to Mr. Paul David, Kindergarten Instructor at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School.  They are the recipient of B105's first maurices $200 grant for Service Learning.

The kids have learned why trees are vital to the environment and will plant their seedling trees today!  I think it's fantastic that kids this age are learning about the ecosystem and Carbon Cycle.  Here's more on this Service Learning Project.
