Visit Duluth is teaming up with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority to once again bring us the "First Ship Contest." It helps kick off the Duluth shipping season on Lake Superior, and the contest is all about guessing when that saltie sails in.

It's almost that time of year!

There's a new website, plus I have included all the shipping websites to enjoy the canal and boats coming to the harbor.

New software has been developed from a local engineering company that allows you to live track ships in the harbor. It also provides more accurate arrival and departure times.

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has announced that the first ‘saltie’ of the 2018 commercial navigation season, the Federal Weser, is on its way to the Port of Duluth-Superior and is expected to arrive tonight by 10 p.m.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced that the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will open this Sunday, March 25th marking the beginning of the 2018 Great Lakes Shipping Season.

Even though it was a pretty chilly morning, we knew it was spring because we saw the first ship leave Duluth, the Roger Blough.  This photographer captured it on video so we can celebrate the important open to the shipping season!

Even though we are experiencing above average temps there is still ice on Lake Superior and the ships coming through under the Aerial are a bit frosty.  This picture is of the final ship to sail under the Aerial Lift Bridge this shipping season.  The Lee A. Tregurtha will call the Duluth Port home until shipping resumes in March.

I stumbled on this on YouTube the other day and thought it was pretty neat.  The Old Globe Grain Elevator was built back in the late 1800's and it's been out of service for quite some time now.  This YouTuber goes around and videos himself exploring historic decaying buildings, and actually got permission in 2014 to look around this old elevator.

The William A Irvin is changing over to "The Haunted Ship" for the halloween season.  Before you board the freighter, you should brush up a little on the history to enhance your experience.  MinnesotaGhosts put together a great YouTube video with some great information and photos of the ship in service.
