Salvation Army

Whether you like glazed, Boston cream, jelly-filled or powdered, today is a great day to be an American and make friends at the office.  It's National Doughnut Day.  I truly thought Ken would bring me a doughnut to celebrate, but like Yukon Cornelius of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, I got nothing!

It's hard to picture a family living in conditions that are without heat, but it happens in the Northland more often than you think.  As our temps drop this week people start to wonder if they can stretch their dollars to keep the heat on in their homes.  The Salvation Army has a program to help, it's called HeatShare and you can help.  You can give the gift of heat!

They're at it again!  Volunteering in the community when and where they are needed.  The PIGS Motorcycle Charity Group from Superior will be at the Superior Wal-Mart tomorrow, Wednesday, December 9 ringing bell for the Salvation Army and their red kettle program.

How exciting for the Twin Cities Salvation Army, they received a HUGE donation in one of their red kettles.  It was one of the largest donations ever made and the donors wanted to remain anonymous.  The check was dropped in a Cub Foods red kettle on Thanksgiving weekend.

You may have noticed that the Salvation Army Red Kettles are out in the Twin Ports.  I always try to make sure I have dollar bills in my pocket so whenever I pass a red kettle I can drop on or two in, I know the bell ringer is appreciative.  Obviously they are giving of their time and energy in hopes they have a full red kettle at the end of their volunteer shift.  In Hibbing, the red kettle stand

The Salvation Army locations across the Northland have their sites set on the upcoming holidays, but that hasn't stopped the Hibbing Salvation Army office from being stellar and earning an award from the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. Congratulations!

While many people in the Northland have already donated their time to ring bells for the Salvation Army, there is still a very large need for people. According to their press release, the Duluth Salvation Army has nearly 800 two-hour shifts available and if volunteers do not step forward, the kettle locations will sit empty.  Therefore, they have decided to sweeten the deal to get more volunteers.

I love stories like this.  We all see the bell ringers donating hours of their time to ring the bells and raise money for the Salvation Army.  It always feels good to make a donation into the red kettles rather than walk right past, but sometimes people go above and beyond the call of duty.

When I have been out shopping in the Northland the past couple of weeks I've noticed several of the Salvation Army's Red Kettles in place, but stand alone, without a bell ringer.  There's no attention-getting sound or someone with a "Happy Holidays" to draw attention or entice you to drop in your change or a spare buck or two.  This may be one reason they are falling short of their 2014
