long johns

This may seem like the dumbest question you'll probably be asked today, but it's been a rather popular topic this morning with our listeners.  I recently bough long underwear and wore it like that, underwear.  Cathy says I'm supposed to wear underwear beneath it.   If that's true, why is it called long underwear?
