Deadline to Remove Ice Houses This Weekend For Many Lakes

It's been warming up the last few days and the snow has been melting. Also, the ice has been starting to get a little thinner. This is normal for this time of year and the deadlines to remove ice shelters reflect that. In Minnesota, if you're south of the Highway 2 line you'll need to have your ice house off the lake by Monday March 4th.

Earlier this week we covered the Solon Springs Lion's Club Ice Fishing contest and got to see some pretty nice ice houses! Now here's the rest with a visit to the other side of the lake. There was some pretty deep snow on the lake and the B105 van wasn't able to make it, so we had an interesting way to get out to the ice house! It's a little red neck!

Two Snowmobilers Dead After Falling Through Ice Near Bayfield, Brings Total To Three This Year

It's been a tragic year for the Bayfield, Wisconsin area this winter. Less than a month ago professional angler Jim Hudson died after his snowmobile broke through the ice. Now it has been confirmed that two more men have died near Madeline island after their snowmobile went through the ice Wednesday night. Also the ice road between Bayfield and Madeline Island has had its share of complications this season.

The outdoors community was shocked this last weekend when we learned that Pro Fisherman Jim Hudson had died after falling through the ice on Lake Superior this weekend. I never met Jim, but I had seen him on outdoor segments and had a lot of respect for him. Here's a great tribute put together by one of his friends.

Every year, the Minnesota DNR has a free weekend for parents to ice fish with their children. On Feb. 16th -18th, anyone 16 or older does not need a fishing license if they are accompanied by a child. The DNR website also has some tips for beginners who would like to take out their children.
