Have You Ever Tried Ham Salad Spread?

Not a lot of people I know have tried Ham Salad Spread, but it was a pretty common thing for me growing up on the range.   It actually has been referred to as Funeral Spread before as well.   Not because it kills you, but because odds are if you were at a funeral on the Iron Range, the church ladies would usually make this.

Are Expiration Dates On Food Reliable? [VIDEO]

I admit that before I buy a lot of things at the grocery store, I look at the expiration date.  This is especially true when it comes to milk and other fresh items.  I've always wondered how accurate these dates actually are and after watching this video, I'm even more suspicious.

DTA’s Grocery Express Pilot Program Receives An Extension

I am fortunate, I am able to drive a car to the grocery store for my groceries.  It wasn't always that easy, I use to live in apartment and while I could drive to the grocery store and home, I had to carry my grocery bags up three flights of stairs, locking and unlocking both my car and apartment door each time.  That STILL was easier than people who have to take a bus to the grocery store and wrestle with their grocery bags going home.  The DTA has a pilot program that just received an extension to determine if the program will cease or become a permanent options for some in the city.

Today’s Food Choices Made Hosting A Football Party Interesting

My husband Homie had finally finished his man cave and wanted to christen it with a football party.  He chose the Viking/Packer game.  Every year (that I don't work) we host a Super Bowl party and serve egg rolls and puncit (a Filipino dish made with noodles, veggies and chicken broth).  However, as our guest list grew so did the menu based on the tastes of those attending.

UPDATE: The DTA Grocery Express Needs More Riders To Succeed

I am fortunate, I am able to drive a car to the grocery store for my groceries.  It wasn't always that easy, I use to live in apartment and while I could drive to the grocery store and home, I had to carry my grocery bags up three flights of stairs, locking and unlocking both my car and apartment door each time.  That STILL was easier than people who have to take a bus to the grocery store and wrestle with their grocery bags going home.  However, unless the DTA sees more riders, the program may cease.

How To Locally-Source Your Thanksgiving Meal; Duluth-Superior Offers A Surprising Number Of Options

Forget the fact that locally-sourced meals have become all the rage;  truth be told - food is just simply better tasting and better for you when it comes from a local farm.  The carrot that comes from the ground in Lakewood Township trumps the one that spent two weeks on a train coming from Argentina.  Add in the fact that there are (usually) less preservatives and the question about whether or not to serve locally is moot.

Spread Hope, Help To End Hunger With Project Joy This Friday

Project Joy is an event that was started by an man I had the honor to work with on the Thanksgiving Day Buffet Committee, Patrick Plys.  Even while battling brain cancer his concern was for others.  Especially, children who went hungry without access to food.  Patrick sadly lost his battle, but not before he told his wife, "he chose Joy".  Thus, Project Joy was developed and has continued to be fueled by the passion of Patrick's friends, family and a generously supportive community.

There are more and more races popping up around the Northland and they all sound interesting. You want to run one or two, but you are a sitter, or someone who isn't as active, or maybe just a walker, here's a way to train for a 5K race that is your pace.

We Live In Northern Minnesota, Why Is Walleye SO Expensive?

On my vacation this past summer our friends purchased salmon and walleye to have for dinner one of our nights together.  I'm not a big fish fan so the salmon was OUT, but they dredged the fresh (not frozen) walleye in Shore Lunch and fried it over a camp fire.  Delicious!  I had to have more!

What’s With The Crappy Quality Of Fruit Nowadays?

Don't tell me it's the change of the seasons from summer fruit to fall fruit.  It doesn't matter what kind of fruit we've purchased lately or even from where, it spoils too fast and doesn't even taste right.  I actually asked Homie if our refrigerator is set at the wrong temperature.  Have you experienced this?

I Have A Jar Of Canned Pickles From 2010, Do You Think It’s Still Good?

With the hot weather we had this weekend I thought a good place to stay cool was cleaning out the basement.  While doing so I ran across canned pickles I've apparently been saving for a L O N G time.  Maybe too long.  How long do home canned pickles last?
