Last weekend I went fishing at a friend's cabin where we always catch northern pike. From a very young age, I was always told that Northern's weren't good eating fish. My friend's family showed me the trick into fileting a northern. It's all about getting those Y Bones out. It's not that hard!
This last weekend, a group of friends and our families got together for a weekend at the lake. We cooked all of our meals over the fire, and one of them was the classic "Hobo Dinner." I was suprised that several of them
I've had a curse put on since the last walleye I missed in July 2006. I had pretty good luck, catching nice walleyes all that summer. Then one day, I missed the biggest walleye of my life. The thing was huge, well over 30 inches.
Believe it or not, I dodged a bullet. They really should have Mother's Day on a different weekend or something. Why have it on fishing opener? After packing everything up, going to the cabin and getting ready to fish, I realized that I totally forgot to get my wife something for Mother's Day. What am I going to do???
I call this Ken Hayes Outdoors in a joking way, since I'm a novice fisherman. I'm working on getting more lake time in, and luckily this year I was able to spend the whole weekend up north. Here's some pictures of how our trip went.
What if you could have access to thousands of lake maps on your smartphone? Well you can with Navionics. It's a pretty amazing app, and I just bought it this weekend gearing up for fishing. I don't have the fancy equipment on my boat, but this is cheap and quick to learn. It's $9.99 for all the lakes in the US.
Earlier this month, boaters were scrambling to get the new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Sticker on their boat. Now the law has changed and you are no longer required to display the sticker on your boat. You will by the year 2015 have to complete an online course by law. Fines will increase this year starting July 1st for not properly following AIS precautions.
Ok, I'm not 50+ yet, and I'm female, so I'm relying on those of you that fit the bill! I posted this article in December of 2011, 500 people have participated. The WI officials would like to see 4, 500 MORE participants. Can you help?
Today my co-host Cathy Kates was asking me when the smelt run happens. Not because she likes smelt, but it's a local hobby people do this time of year. We're already hearing of smelt fry's at local churches starting, so is the smelt run in full swing. Luckily, I've found a great online resource.
There was some talk a few weeks ago about moving up the fishing opener to May 5th because of the record warm March. Well now isn't that funny, considering up North in the Arrowhead there is at least a half of foot of snow on the ground today.
