We've all used it, the parking lot that gives us a view like that in the picture above. Some families have taken pictures of their children feeding the seagulls, some have parked there to walk the Lakewalk, runners have recovered after Grandma's Marathon. I have lived in the Northland all my life and honestly didn't know the parking lot had a name, and now, it's been changed.

Just Saturday I was with my family in Canal Park and as we saw a large group of kids swimming at 'The Cribs, that big concrete structure not far off shore. I thought to myself, that water has to be cold and as I watched kids jump in I hoped they'd be okay with no lifeguards at that location.

So sad to find out that on Monday a young boy jumped in, never surfaced, and that it wasn't until 32 minutes later that rescue crews located him under the water.

On A Cold And Wet Morning, Grandmas Marathon Has Its Closest Finish In Its 35 Year History

I experienced firsthand the cold, wet conditions at the start of the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. I stood in the rain with thousands of other runners waiting to start, but looking back it was something I'm glad I experienced. Like Cathy Kates, I finished the half with a personal best time due to a nice cold wind at my back and plenty of cloud cover.

While my legs are sore today, I was happy to again be a part of the race as well as the finish line festivities as a stage announcer. Who cares about weather, it was a great weekend and what a 35th running of Grandmas Marathon!

Victory belonged to Christopher Kipyego on Saturday morning, except for one thing. He hadn’t crossed the finish line of the 35th Grandma’s Marathon.

He stopped at the front of the electronic timing mat on Canal Park drive, about 60 feet short of the actual finish. The 37-year-old Kenyan was ready to celebrate when he saw race officials urging him to continue.

Duluth, MN has gotten lucky! Three major snow storms have passed to the South of us, leaving us balking at the local forecasters. However, the last one DID bring 50+ mph winds. Artistic Mother Nature used Lake Superior waves and Park Point as her canvas for some phenomenal nature artwork, I just HAD to share.
