Stewart Mills is running for Congress because of his family's deer camp doctrine, "If you complain about something, it's your job to fix it."  Rick Nolan has been sending the message that he's "one of us.  That he "hunts, fishes, and picks a little wild rice."  So that got to me thinking... do our deer camp rules and values apply to politics?

Here is a few of our rules.

No shooting guns after you've been drinking.   This makes sense.   It could be the same with politics. Don't pass laws while drinking.

First one to arrive there gets to pick the bunk.  If this applied to politics, it would be something like "early bird gets the worm."  Maybe this would get Congress to be a little more motivated and hungry.

Clean up after yourself.  You leave the place better than you found it. Boy wouldn't that be nice.

If you're not up helping build deer stands before the season, you get the crappiest one.  You get what you put in.

Everybody pitches in.  Everybody brings something to the table.

Close the lid on the outhouse when you're done.  Crap stinks, and the seat will frost over.  Not sure how this applies.

Everybody shares what we get.  It doesn't matter who shoots a deer, we all bring home venison.  We all put work into the harvest, we all benefit from it.  That SHOULD be how Government works.

No whining. Both sides need to stop the smear ads!

Everybody brings a meal.  It goes back to everyone pitching in and helping out.  And nobody complains if they don't like the meal.  You eat it and like it.

In closing, some of these values would be good to have in Congress.  But let's be frank.  Politicians always want to look like "one of us."  If I had to guess who would fit in better around card table at deer camp, drinking beers and playing cards... it would be Mills.  But does that make him a better politician than Nolan?  Maybe he will have his chance to prove it after Tuesday.

Disclaimer:  I am not voting for either candidate, because I no longer live in the 8th district, I just hunt there.
