The St. Louis County Historical Society is seeking volunteer docents for its new Ojibwe Gallery.  There are stories of the people that need to be told and it would be great for someone with the knowledge to share, but the Gallery would love to have someone to show the art and history.

This is a great opportunity for lovers of art, history and culture. The Ojibwe Gallery features the work of nationally recognized 19th century painter Eastman Johnson. Mr. Johnson’s paintings and drawings, notable for their realism and attention to detail, are on display. The Society’s collection includes 37 works produced by Johnson during his two year stay in the areas now known as Duluth, Superior and Grand Portage. Training will be provided immediately for those who are interested.

An equally important component of the Gallery is the selection of the Native American Indian, primarily Ojibwe, artifacts from the Society’s collection that lend insight into Ojibwe culture. Training will orient volunteers to the art, history and culture aspects of this exhibit, as well as to the Society’s partnerships with the tribal entities of the region, which include Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

If interested, you can pick up an application at the Society’s administrative offices, from the Visitors Service Desk or online at Any additional questions or concerns should be directed to Collections Manager and Exhibits Curator, Samantha M. Tubbs, via e-mail at or by phone at (218) 576-3114.

The Ojibwe Gallery is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm every day of the week.

Volunteers are needed for all days.
