Energy drinks have gained in popularity over the years.  I admit that I drink them on rare occasion.  We've heard warnings that drinking a lot of them can be dangerous, as well as mixing them with alcohol.  Now, it appears that even a single can has the potential to be dangerous.

StarTribune.com shared a quote from Dr. Anna Svatikova, who is with the Mayo Clinic and was the lead author of a study on energy drinks.  Dr. Svatikova is quoted as saying, “We now show that the increases in blood pressure are accompanied by increases in norepinephrine, a stress hormone chemical, and this could predispose an increased risk of cardiac events — even in healthy people."

It appears the issue is that most energy drinks contain the amount of caffeine contained in 3 cups of coffee.  While that may not sound like too much, most people drink energy drinks significantly faster than they would 3 cups of coffee.  Therefore, all the caffeine and other ingredients are hitting your body at once.

I'll still enjoy the occasional energy drink as I don't drink anything fast.  Will reports such as this alter your habits when it comes to energy drinks?
