Randy Travis to Plead Guilty in Drunk Driving Case
Randy Travis is expected to enter a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge, which will allow the singer to avoid jail time after his drunk driving arrest last August.
The Associated Press reports that Grayson County (Texas) District Attorney Joe Brown says the details will be released after Travis’s court appearance on Thursday (Jan. 31).
Travis’s attorney expects the court to rule in favor of probation, instead of the maximum punishment of two years in jail and a $4,000 fine. Since the Aug. 7 arrest and a dust-up in a church parking lot later that month, Travis has quit drinking. This week, a representative for the singer said he is receiving treatment while staying sober and recording a new album.
Travis’s troubles first became public knowledge following last year’s Super Bowl, when he was charged with public intoxication after cops found him in his car outside of a church parking lot. In August, he allegedly crashed his Trans Am and was found naked and argumentative by police, which spurred his fall arrest. Earlier this month, blood-alcohol tests came back revealing the singer to have more than a .15 level. The legal limit is .08.
Last month, Travis entered a not guilty plea in response to the parking lot incident that resulted in assault charges. The trial for that case will take place on March 11.
