Parking Info and Traffic Advisory for Friday’s Christmas City of the North Parade

It's the most wonderful time of the year and the most anticipated parade of the season.  The Christmas City of the North Parade!  Bundle up the family and continue a tradition that started in 1957.  Or course, you'll want to know the best roadways into the city and where to park.  The Duluth Police Department has provided useful information that will make your night most enjoyable.

This year's 55th Annual Christmas City of the North Parade will start at 6:20p on Friday, November 22nd.  The parade route will be the same as last year. Parade units will assemble on Railroad Street.

The parade will travel east on Railroad Street to Lake Avenue, proceed North on the Lake Avenue Viaduct, then turn west on Superior Street to the termination point at 5th Avenue West.

Traffic diversions will begin at 2:00p and end approximately 8:30p at the conclusion of the parade.

2:00 p.m. Railroad Street will close between Lake Avenue and Canal Park Drive to facilitate the set-up of KBJR’s television coverage.

3:00 pm the Railroad Street closure will be extended to Garfield Avenue for parade lineup.

5:45 pm the remainder of the Parade route will begin to close to traffic.

The only access to the Canal Park area and Park Point will be from the Lake Avenue Viaduct to Canal Park Drive. Traffic around the Railroad Street area will be very limited. Lake Avenue South will be closed to northbound traffic at Buchanan Street; however the Lake Avenue entrance to Red Lobster will remain open. All other northbound traffic should detour to Canal Park Drive.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. I-35 Northbound and Southbound exits onto Lake Avenue will be closed for duration of the parade. Travelers going to Canal Park or Park Point will have to use alternate routes from the east to access Lake Avenue.

Access to the DECC will be either down 6th Avenue West to Michigan Street, left on Michigan Street to 5th Avenue West, then down 5th Ave West onto Harbor Drive, and around the back of the DECC to the East gate near the Irvin, OR I-35 northbound to the 5 th Ave West exit and turn right down to Harbor Drive. Motorists are urged to take the I-35 northbound route to the DECC.

Superior Street traffic should use Michigan, First, or Second Streets during the parade.  DTA buses will use 1st Street for Westbound routes, and 2nd Street for Eastbound routes.

NO PARKING

• -Superior Street after 5:00 p.m. from 6th Avenue West to Lake Avenue, both sides. This will include handicap zones.
• -Michigan Street after 5:00 p.m., between 5th and 6th Avenues West, both sides. This will include handicap zones.
• -Both sides of 1st Avenue West from Michigan Street to Superior Street
• -The first 4 metered spots on the lower side of 1st Street west of the Holiday Center Ramp Exit.
• -Harbor Drive is no parking.

Cars parked in violation of the posted no parking will be tagged and may be towed after 5:00P.
