There will be a long daily closure from 8am-5pm on weekdays for the Oliver Bridge that connects the communities of Oliver and Gary New Duluth.  Beginning on April 27th, motorists will have to take alternate routes to cross over to Minnesota, such as the Bong Bridge or Blatnik Bridge.

The bridge will remain open on weekends and on holidays.  It will also remain open for high volume traffic events in the Northland such as Grandma's Marathon, the Bayfront Blues Festival, and Tall Ships.

We reached out to the Douglas County Highway commissioner for more information.  Jason J. Jackman told us that CN Raildroads is working on a multi year plan to strengthen the bridge, including the following:

  • Replacing the two 90 foot spans on the east and west ends of the bridge
  • Steel Strengthening on the 30 bridge spans
  • upgrades to the bridge deck and rail

There will also likely be extended closures throughout the project for lengthier projects.

More information will be available as we get closer to the project beginning.
