Turns out whoever takes home the North Star Challenge Cup this weekend will also be the last winner of the tournament.

The University of Minnesota released a statement on Tuesday talking about the end of tournament.

"Following discussions between the five institutions, the decision has been made that the North Star College Cup will not continue after this year’s upcoming tournament.

“Our institutions had hoped the tournament would appeal more to fans, however the interest level has not grown over the last four years as we had hoped. In addition, teams have expressed interest in rewarding their fans with games at their home venues.”

The University of Minnesota-Duluth will have one more shot at adding their names to the teams that have won the cup. The University of Minnesota, Bemidji State and St. Cloud State have all won the North Star Challenge Cup in the three years of the tournament.

Duluth is currently ranked number two in the nation in the latest USCHO polls, with Minnesota at number six and Bemidji State at 20. The Bulldogs will faceoff against the Gophers on Friday night. The winner of that game will play the winner of Bemidji State and St. Cloud for the cup on Saturday night.
