New “Timber Flyer” Officially Open at Spirit Mountain [PHOTOS + VIDEO]
Spirit Mountain officially inaugurated the latest fun family attraction in the Twin Ports – the Timber Flyer zip line – with a ceremony Tuesday. Having already served visitors for about a week, the Timber Flyer officially gained its “open for business” status with a ceremony including local government officials, the Chamber of Commerce, members of the media, and riders waiting for their chance to soar down the hillside.
A couple morning rain showers didn’t keep a line of excited riders away from the ribbon cutting ceremony, which featured Duluth Mayor Don Ness and Minnesota State Senator Roger Reinert. Ness and Reinert welcomed visitors and commended Spirit Mountain for its contribution of a new attraction to the community and region. Ness and his son were the first to board the Timber Flyer for the morning. After a fun ride, both exited with smiles on their faces. Reinert also took a ride down the hillside.
The Timber Flyer is described on the Spirit Mountain website as follows:
An exhilarating thrill ride unlike a traditional zip line. On the “Timber Flyer” you can ride Single or Double on a bench-type seat secured with safety belts. The ride takes you zipping through the treetops, 700 feet down the mountain, overlooking Lake Superior and the City of Duluth. At the bottom of the zip line the “Timber Flyer” pulls you back up to the top… allowing you to take in the view on the way back up as well. The roundtrip takes riders approximately 90 seconds.
The Timber Flyer is the latest in a series of attractions being added to Spirit Mountain. The Timber Twister opened about a year ago, and the ‘Flyer’ and ‘Twister’ will be joined by a miniature golf course and snow tubing hill that is already in the works.
Tony Hart from our sister station Mix 108 got the chance to be one of the first Timber Flyer riders. Check out his ride here!
