Once the Minnesota Vikings traded away Matt Cassel, the search was on for another, more cost-effective veteran quarterback to backup starter Teddy Bridgewater.  On the first day of free agency, they found their man.

StarTribune.com is reporting that the Vikings agreed to terms with Shaun Hill, the 35-year-old quarterback who spent last season with the St. Louis Rams.  Hill was injured last season, but did come back to play later in the year when he lead the Rams to an upset over the Denver Broncos.  Hill also has a history with the Vikings, who first brought him into the league as a free agent in 2002.

It's not as splashy as the other big signings out there, but it does fill a need for the team.  Spending big on free agents is a risky business, so look for the Vikings to sign second-tier names to fill needs and continue to build through the upcoming draft.

Of course, they just may have something up their sleeve depending on how the Adrian Peterson story plays out.
