With extremely cold (yes, even colder than we've seen) temperatures forecasted for Sunday and Monday, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has ordered all public K-12 schools closed Monday, January 4, 2014.

Daytime high temperatures for Monday are going to struggle to hit -10 degrees, with low temperatures well below -20. That, added with wind chills, makes for conditions dangerous enough for the Governor to order schools closed. In a news release regarding the closings, Dayton said the following:

The safety of Minnesota’s schoolchildren must be our first priority. I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday. I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions.

This is a rare move, however not completely unprecedented. In the 1990's, Governor Arne Carlson ordered schools closed for cold weather on three different occasions.

If there are any updates to this, or if any Wisconsin schools also close, we'll have the latest updates on our closings page.
