It's not very often where I find something that I am so excited about that I actually feel the need to share it.  However Merino wool is one of those things.  I've heard about it before, but until I was finally given a pair of SmartWool socks for Christmas, I never truly believed.

Now I believe! And trust me, I'm not getting paid to say this.  In fact, I'm trying to budget money so I can have at least 5 more pairs of these socks.  They are amazing, and here's why:

1.  Merino wool is soft! It doesn't scratch, itch, or anything bad!  They are more comfortable than cotton socks.

2.  They wick away moisture. If you take nothing else away from this, please remember that COTTON KILLS.  That's the saying when it comes to outdoor survival.  Cotton socks absorb moisture, which can make your cold feet wet and even colder.  This isn't the case with Merino wool.  You're feet will always be dry, which helps with comfort, and even helps keep your feet cooler in the summer too.  (goes both ways!)  Oh, and don't be one of those idiots who wears a pair of cotton socks under the wool socks! I used to do it, completely ruins the point of wearing wool.

3.  Less foot odor. Wet and sweaty feet = more smelly bacteria.  Nice dry feet = less smell.  It may sound gross, but usually I wear my Merino wool socks 3 times before I wash them.

4.  Wool lasts longer! I've gone through so many cotton socks that it's amazing.  Wool is stronger, more flexible and lasts longer.  It's also more expensive too.  My socks are SmartWool socks, and they can be up to $20 a pair.  But they are worth every penny!

So, as I sit here typing this blog, my feet are sweaty and gross inside my boots because I have my cotton socks on.  At the same time, I have another tab open on my computer with a shopping cart maxed out with new socks.  That's how much I love them.  Give them a try, especially if you spend long days outdoors.  You won't regret it!
