Meet a Young Jack Sparrow in New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Trailer

Javier Bardem was looking pretty rough in the first trailer for the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. His ghost pirate killer Captain Salazar had cracked drywall for a face with some nasty black goo dripping from his lips. In the new trailer for the latest film in the Disney franchise we get to see him with some life back in his face (literally), and another Pirates character looking mighty youthful.

The new trailer takes us back in time to meet a young Jack Sparrow, though with some odd and questionable-looking CGI – Disney and Lucasfilm just can’t quit digitally re-aging iconic characters, can they? Captain Salazar has some beef with Johnny Depp‘s Sparrow and goes on a search to kill him and all the pirates at sea. We also meet the film’s newest protagonist Carina (Kaya Scodelario), an astronomer who looks an awful lot like Elizabeth Swann, get another look at those ghost sharks, and lots of sea battles. The most exciting bit though? Captain Barbossa’s (Geoffrey Rush) monkey is back!

The new trailer also arrived with a longer synopsis detailing Carina’s role in the plot:

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

The new trailer in many ways feels like a return to the first two Pirates movies with the same adventurous energy and visuals that made those so fun. Henry (Brenton Thwaites) saving Carina the gallows feels like a call back to the great lynching sequence from the first film, the shots of Salazar and his crew stampeding across the shore recall the underwater march of Barbossa and his pirates, and Jack locked up in the cell looks like something right out of the original movie. Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the duo behind Kon-Tiki, have definitely succeeded in evoking a world that feels apart of the first movies and it has me a bit more excited for this new installment.

For even more nostalgia, Dead Men Tell No Tales will also feature the returns of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. The film hits theaters May 26. Check out the new poster below.
