Luke Bryan Addresses Las Vegas Shooting on ‘Good Morning America’

Luke Bryan didn’t hesitate to call Sunday and Monday the most heartbreaking days of his life. Appearing on Good Morning America, the new American Idol judge tried to put the Las Vegas shootings in perspective.

Seeing the faces of the nearly 60 killed when gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire has been particularly difficult for Bryan. “They embody America,” he says in a Wednesday morning (Oct. 4) appearance. “It’s a country music festival, but it’s America …  I mean, it was one of the most heartbreaking days of my life, and for this country too.”

Bryan talked Jason Aldean on Monday. Aldean was onstage when the shooting began, and Bryan says his friend is really shaken up. “Knowing they’ll never be able to un-see these things, you get lumps, and you get nauseated … it’s hard,” he says.

These Are the Victims, These Are Their Stories

Fellow American Idol judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry echoed Bryan’s sentiments and Perry called for gun reform. “We have to put our foot down more than just sending our condolences,” she says. “I know it’s a touchy subject, but I think we really have to take a good hard look of it.”

The trio joined GMA to talk about Idol, the new season of which begins on ABC in January. The events at Sunday’s Route 91 Harvest Festival demanded a broader conversation, however, and all three were prepared to speak candidly. Bryan is currently on his annual Farm Tour, with a stop planned in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Thursday (Oct. 5). The CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee also says he’ll be releasing a new album in 2017, which includes the current single “Light It Up.”
